July 24th - 27th, 2008

Friday was "Let Your Geek Flag Fly" day (it was also Star Wars day, so, you know...)

Anyway, we got our costumes on and hit the Con early. I was dressed as Dr. Henry Killinger and she like one of the Monarch's henchmen - both characters from the Venture Bros cartoon show.

We slowly made our way to the massive 6,500 person Hall H, where all the major movie sneak peeks were happening. We were there for a while. First, Watchmen. Not sure what to think quite yet. The movie looks amazing. The only concern I have is that I've yet to see a clip that shows any real dialogue. But, for the time being, I'm thinking positive on this movie.

Director Zack Snyder and Watchmen co-creator/artist Dave Gibbons...

Billy Crudup (Jon Osterman / Dr. Manhattan), Jackie Earle Haley (Walter Kovacs / Rorschach)...

Carla Gugino (Sally Jupiter / Silk Spectre), Malin Akerman (Laurie Juspeczyk / Silk Spectre II)...

Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Edward Blake / The Comedian), Patrick Wilson (Dan Dreiberg / Nite Owl II)...

Matthew Goode (Adrian Veidt / Ozymandias)

Next was the Wolf Man panel. A remake of the classic, this time as a 19th century period piece...

F/X by Rick Baker and starring Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro (as well as Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving - not present)...

Next was The Spirit. This one... well, Frank Miller gave a nice speech about how he initially refused to direct the movie but then had second thoughts because he felt sure something bad would happen if somebody else directed it. Unfortunately, it looks like something bad happened anyway. Not only do we see the Octopus, but it's like a costume fashion show. The dialogue is stiff and hokey. There's an invented, dream-like character for the movie. Basically, it looks like Miller tried to imitate the Sin City Rodriguez style combined with the Zack Snyder 300 style without any of the accumulated skills necessary to pull that off. I've got a very bad feeling about this one - as was the general consensus at the Con...

Frank Miller (Director), Miller and producer Deborah Del Prete...

Jaime King (Lorelei Rox), Samuel L. Jackson (The Octopus)...

One more quick pic of M holding a cool lightsabre and we're off...
